How We Calculate Thinset Mortar

What is Published Data vs Calculated vs Planning Allowance?
- Published Manufacturer Data: Coverage ranges (sq ft/bag) and water ratios taken directly from manufacturer Technical Data Sheets (TDS).
- Calculated Yield: The net area, bed volume, and nominal bags generated by dividing effective area by published coverage.
- Estimated Planning Allowance: User-configurable margins for cuts, waste (10-15%), back-buttering skim coats (+15%), and uncoupling membrane cavity filling.
1. Net Project Area Formula
When dimensions are entered as length × width, the net area is calculated simply:
For multi-area projects (e.g., bathroom floor + shower pan + tub surround), the net area is the exact sum of all individual area segments. In metric mode, square meters are converted: 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft.
2. Effective Area and Waste Allowance
Tiles require diagonal cuts, perimeter fitting, and trimming around fixtures. Unused thinset in the mixing bucket and residue drying on tools also results in loss. The effective area incorporates this planning allowance:
Where a 10% waste allowance sets the Waste Factor to 0.10, resulting in Net Area × 1.10.
3. Back-Buttering Adjustment for Large-Format Tile (LFT)
Per ANSI A108.5, back-buttering applies an approximately 1/32" to 1/16" flat skim coat to the back of tiles 15 inches or larger. Because this skim coat is an independent application of mortar beyond the substrate ridges, we apply a validated 15% material consumption increase when back-buttering is active:
4. Bag Quantity & Ceil Rounding Logic
We divide the total effective area by the product-specific coverage for the selected trowel notch:
Recommended Purchase = Ceiling(Base Bags)
We display both the raw calculated decimal (e.g. 2.75 bags) and the practical ceiling purchase recommendation (3 bags), preventing misleading fractional purchases.
5. Dual-Layer Membrane Logic (DITRA & DITRA-HEAT)
When an uncoupling membrane is selected, two separate mortar layers are calculated:
- Substrate-to-Membrane Layer: Calculated at ~80 sq ft per 50 lb bag using a 1/4" × 3/16" V-notch or 1/4" × 1/4" square notch.
- Tile-to-Membrane Layer: Calculated based on the chosen tile size and trowel notch to fill waffle cutouts and bed the tile.
Both layers are summed together to output the total bag purchase recommendation.
