When a notched trowel is combed across a floor at angle θ (typically 60°), the cross-sectional volume of mortar deposited per unit length is defined by: V = W_notch × D_notch × sin(θ). When the tile is set and collapsed, this volume spreads across both the ridge and valley widths, producing an average compressed bed thickness T_bed = V ÷ (W_notch + W_tooth). For a 1/2" × 1/2" square notch, this yields a solid 3/16" (4.8 mm) continuous bed.

2. Substrate Suction & Open Time Mechanics

All Portland cement thinsets require water for hydration (the crystallization process that creates compressive strength). If the substrate is dry, high-suction concrete, it acts like a sponge, pulling water out of the bottom of the mortar bed within minutes. This produces 'dry-curing' and skinning over. Always sponge down porous slabs to Saturated Surface Dry (SSD) condition before troweling.
