Schluter KERDI Thinset Calculator: Membrane & Tile Bedding
Schluter KERDI requires a dual-stage mortar calculation: embedding anchoring fleece to drywall/cement board, sealing KERDI-BAND seams, and setting tile.
To qualify for Schluter's Lifetime System Warranty, use Schluter ALL-SET®, FAST-SET®, SET®, or an unmodified thinset meeting ANSI A118.1. Never use premixed mastic or non-approved modified mortars over KERDI membrane in showers.

The Schluter Mortar Chemistry Rule: Why Standard Modified Thinsets Fail
The most common question contractors and DIYers ask when installing Schluter KERDI is: "Why does Schluter recommend unmodified thinset when tile manufacturers recommend modified thinset?"
Standard polymer-modified thinsets conforming to ANSI A118.4 dry through water evaporation into the surrounding air and porous substrate. When you place an impervious porcelain tile on top of an impervious waterproof polyethylene sheet (KERDI), there is zero air contact and zero moisture absorption. Standard modified latex cannot dry—it remains soft, gummy, and unbonded for weeks.
Unmodified thinset (ANSI A118.1) and specialized redispersible polymer mortars like Schluter ALL-SET do not require air to cure. They cure through chemical hydration (crystal matrix formation), transforming completely solid in the total absence of air.
Schluter KERDI Trowel Sizing & Coverage Rates
| Operation | Recommended Trowel Size | Coverage per 50 lb Bag | Mortar Consistency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedding KERDI Membrane | 1/8" × 1/8" Square or 1/4" × 3/16" V-Notch | ~200–240 sq ft | Soft, pourable pancake batter |
| KERDI-BAND Seam Joints | 1/4" × 3/16" V-Notch or Flat Skim | ~250 linear ft | Smooth frosting |
| 12×24 Porcelain Wall Tile | 1/2" × 1/2" Square Notch | ~40–45 sq ft | Stiff peanut butter (holds ridge) |
| Mosaic Shower Pan Tile | 3/16" × 5/32" V-Notch | ~85–95 sq ft | Medium cream (prevents squeeze-through) |
How to Embed KERDI and Verify 100% Fleece Saturation
To properly embed KERDI:
- Comb the thinset in straight, parallel lines using the KERDI-TROWEL. Never swirl or create circular trowel marks.
- Press the membrane flat into the mortar ridges. Working from the center toward outer edges, use the flat side of a rubber grout float or drywall taping knife to firmly push out all trapped air.
- Lift to verify: Peel back an edge immediately. The anchoring fleece backing on the sheet must be 100% saturated with wet thinset. If dry spots exist, the mortar has skimmed over or was mixed too dry.
- Maintain a 2-inch overlap at all KERDI-BAND joints, bedded with unmodified thinset or ALL-SET.
