1. The Science of the Water-to-Cement Ratio (w/c)
Portland cement requires an exact chemical stoichiometry of water to hydrate tricalcium silicate ($C_3S$) and dicalcium silicate ($C_2S$) into calcium silicate hydrate ($C-S-H$) gel. Adding excessive water creates capillary pores as the surplus water evaporates, reducing compressive strength from 4,000 PSI down to less than 1,800 PSI. Always measure water to within 2 fluid ounces.
2. Chemical Slaking Mechanics
Modern polymer-modified mortars contain dry powders including methyl cellulose ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, and redispersible latex copolymers. When water is first introduced, these dry polymers repel liquid briefly. The mandatory 5 to 10 minute slake period allows water molecules to penetrate the polymer skin, uncoiling the molecular chains so they can disperse uniformly throughout the matrix during the final 1-minute remix.
3. Understanding False Set vs Final Set
