1 Using Standard VersaBond on 12×24 Tiles

1. VersaBond LFT Medium-Bed Non-Slump Chemistry

VersaBond LFT is classified under ANSI A118.4HT ('H' for Heavy and Large Tile, 'T' for Thixotropic). Unlike standard thinset which relies on surface tension to hold tile, VersaBond LFT uses high-molecular-weight cellulose ethers and specialty cross-linking polymers. This allows the mortar bed to be applied up to 3/4" (19 mm) thick without slumping under a 20-pound porcelain slab.

2. Substrate Priming & Saturated Surface Dry (SSD)

When spreading VersaBond over dry concrete or cement backerboard, the porous substrate quickly draws water out of the bottom of the mortar bed. To prevent dry-curing, wipe the substrate with a clean, damp sponge immediately before combing mortar to achieve a Saturated Surface Dry (SSD) condition.

3. 24-Hour Hydration Kinetics

VersaBond achieves approximately 60% of its ultimate compressive strength within the first 24 hours at 70°F (21°C).
