1 50% Brick Running Bond Offset

1. Subfloor Preparation & Flatness Qualification (ANSI A108.02)

Standard tiles allow up to 1/4" deviation in 10 feet. 12×24 tiles have zero flexural bending capacity and strictly mandate a maximum variation of 1/8" in 10 feet (and no more than 1/16" in 2 feet). Any high spots must be ground flat with a diamond cup wheel, and low spots filled with self-leveling underlayment or medium-bed patching compound before tiling begins.

2. Offset Patterns & Crown Warpage Control

During factory firing at 2,200°F, porcelain tiles contract and develop a natural convex crown in the center. Under ANSI A108.02 Section 4.3.8:

  • Approved: 33% Running Bond: Each tile overlaps the adjacent tile by no more than 8 inches (1/3 of the tile length). This pairs the tile crown with a mid-height zone of the neighboring tile, keeping lippage within the 1/32" ANSI limit.
