5 Fatal 12×24 Tile Installation Mistakes
Why 12×24 porcelain installations fail more frequently than any other tile format.
All porcelain tiles bow slightly upward in the center during kiln firing. Placing the center crown of one tile next to the low corners of adjacent tiles creates severe lippage that mechanical clips cannot pull out.

Standard tiles allow up to 1/4" deviation in 10 feet. 12×24 tiles have zero flexural bending capacity and strictly mandate a maximum variation of 1/8" in 10 feet (and no more than 1/16" in 2 feet). Any high spots must be ground flat with a diamond cup wheel, and low spots filled with self-leveling underlayment or medium-bed patching compound before tiling begins.
2. Offset Patterns & Crown Warpage Control
During factory firing at 2,200°F, porcelain tiles contract and develop a natural convex crown in the center. Under ANSI A108.02 Section 4.3.8:

4. Mechanical Leveling Systems
Mechanical clip-and-wedge systems do not pull warped tiles flat—they hold adjacent tile edges at identical elevations while the wet mortar cures. Tighten wedges using specialized tension pliers to avoid overtightening, which can lift the opposite side of the tile and pull it out of the mortar bed.
