Grey thinset darkens the back of clear or translucent glass, completely destroying the vibrant color of the tile and turning aqua or blue mosaics into a dark, muddy green.

1. Substrate Preparation for Small Format Mosaics
Because individual mosaic chips are small (1" to 2"), they conform to the exact shape of the substrate. Any protrusion—such as a slightly proud drywall screw or a 1/16" ridge in the backerboard joint—will telegraph directly through the mosaic sheet. Sand, scrape, and float the wall completely smooth before spreading adhesive.
2. Troweling & The 'Knockdown' Technique
Comb mortar with a 3/16" × 5/32" V-notch trowel at a consistent 60° angle. Immediately after combing, hold the trowel flat and gently sweep across the ridges to flatten the tops into a uniform 1/16" continuous bed. This ensures 100% coverage without leaving ridges visible behind translucent glass tiles.
3. Sheet Alignment & Grout Joint Matching
The hallmark of a novice installation is visible grid lines between neighboring mosaic sheets. When placing sheets, ensure the gap between adjacent sheets exactly matches the spacing between the individual chips within the sheet. Stagger sheets in an interlocking brick pattern where possible to camouflage sheet borders.
